The Trouble With Blogs

The real trouble with blogs is that when you get too busy to write, by the time you're ready to get started again, you have no idea where to begin! Remember, click on the images to see them in all their glory.

- My newest granddaughter arrived on the scene 3 weeks ago. She's as beautiful as the others, but sister Zoe is under the impression that the baby is her personal property.

- Brother-in-law Jess survived his surgery passing with flying colors. However, it was very invasive and took a lot out of him. Still, he is slowing regaining his strength and has only a few days before the staples are removed.

- My car was broken into and radio taken out of the dash. Thankfully, they didn't tear up the rag top or do too much damage. Still, it's annoying and irritating and definitely reinforces my determination to get out of Houston. (I am really a country girl in every way!)

- School starts on Monday when I join an online class (11 of us) of students from around the country. Silly me...I am SO excited!

- Leo comes home in less than 2 weeks and we have plans to spend some real, quality time at the hacienda. I will be taking off from work for a bit, and we have plans to get some fishing in, watch some h.s. football, visit some friends and family and just hang out together. Yippee!

- Work on my kitchen commences and we deal with this last big push to get the house finished. We have a big party planned for November, and I am wanting to be able to use my kitchen to handle the event. Here's to hoping we meet our deadline and have a really great time!

Sunday at the Hospital

I spent the day at the hospital with Jess, and left at 4pm to go home, cook for the week, and take a nap. I'm at work now, taking a bit of a break to provide an update here.

Jess has a wonderful new scar from the top of his head, just above his right eye, curving down to just in front of the center of his ear. He was curious about it, so I took a picture of it with my cell phone and showed it to him. Um...that may not have been the right thing to do. I would post it here, but not everyone gets as excited about the beauty of well-executed medical procedures as I do, so I've opted not to.

I was a little concerned when I first arrived at the hospital about the amount of pain Jess was in. The nurse gave him a nice round of morphine, and although it took a bit for him to respond, he finally did. As Lester later pointed out, that's about as invasive as surgery gets. He's right, you know. For me to expect there to be no pain at all was a bit unrealistic. Still, I was happy to see him respond to the medication and that the afternoon seemed downright restful for him. But, I'm ahead of myself here.

I arrived at 9am thinking I would find Jess in a new room. Remember, I didn't see him at all yesterday. I was surprised, and a little concerned, to find him still in NICU (neurosurgery intensive care unit). When I got in to see him, I was pleased to find him sitting up in a chair beside the bed. The nurse told me they were getting him ready to be moved to his room. After his shot he relaxed a bit and was able to sleep some. A little after noon the nurse administered another shot of morphine. I was actually thinking the second round was overkill as he was finally resting well, but figured out what it was all about when she began pulling monitors off, removing IVs, and getting him prepped for the move.

Right before the wheelchair came to pick him up, Jess received some unexpected visitors. Johnny and Martha Ramirez came by for a visit! Johnny and Leo grew up together in the valley, and Jess' wife Grace often served as the "older sister" to both boys. Leo, Johnny, Martha and I have spent enough time together over the years to know that we enjoy each others' company a great deal, even though we don't get together often. It was a nice surprise for both Jessie and I when they showed up for a visit.

Jess' move to his room was uneventful. He is in room M548 and has a direct telephone number into the room. Today would not have been a good one to call as Jess slept for almost the entire time. If you want to call, I'd wait for tomorrow or Tuesday. The number is 713-441-0965. Uncle Walter went back to Lubbock early this morning, and Trevor went back to check on things in Port Lavaca and get things ready for Jess to go home. I spent the day in a [very comfortable] chair in his room reading my textbook (school starts next week!) while Jess slept. Lester is still in town and came and went throughout the day to check on Jess' progress. I expect him to stay another day or two in case he is needed. I wish I didn't have a couple of projects with deadlines to work on this week...I would like to hang out with Jess some more. Still, if I can take a couple of days off next week to hang out with him at home, I'm guessing we'll both enjoy that.

Anyway, just wanted to let everyone know that Jessie is doing fine. He speaks coherently [always; no episodes of confusion at all] and looks very good. His coloring is good, and as I pointed out before, the scar is quite pretty (if you go for that sort of thing). Today I could see a little bit more swelling around his right eye than yesterday, but the nurse assured me that was reasonable and temporary. In my opinion, things are going quite well.

Moved into a Room

Jess has been moved into a private room now. Main 548 is a good spot. There is a lovely view of the a.c. unit from the window, but otherwise is roomy with a very comfortable chair. Jess is resting better now but sleeping a bit more than I expected. He had two surprise visitors, Johnny and Martha Ramirez. It was a lovely visit. I will sit with Jess a bit longer before heading off to work for a bit. My apologies for disjointed comments and grammer and spelling errors. I'm posting from a device that does not allow me to actually see what I've typed in. Still, it is something. :-)

8pm Visit

I was worried about disturbing Jess when I went in at 8pm, but shouldn't have. We had a really nice visit. Lester came up as well, and by the time we left at a little after 9 Jess was definitely ready for some sleep. But he was his old self, joking and laughing, snoozing a bit here and there, and doing his best to make me smile. He has a bit of a "crick" in his neck and that seemed to be bothering him more than all the other pains put together. The nurse was surprised that the morphine didn't help and tried something else a little later (sorry...I'm not very good with the names of medicines). Still, he was in good spirits, looked well, and spoke clearly and coherently the whole time I was there.

I'm not going to get to see him tomorrow. I have to make a run down to Port Lavaca, then head to my sister's to take care of some computer problems. But I should be back at the hospital on Sunday morning and I'm hoping he'll be out of ICU then. I'll try to post another update then for those of you following the Jessie saga. :-)

Another Jess Update

Jess was starting to rest a little better when we left a bit after 5pm. Visitation is closed until 8pm, but I'm hoping to head back then. Again, his color was good and he recognized all of us with no problem. The nurse pointed out that the doctors keep things "flushed" out while they work, so there is often quite a build-up of fluids after surgery like this. She thinks that the drain is working well and is probably largely responsible for his headache subsiding some.

As soon as the drainage slows down a bit, the drainage tube will be removed. I have high hopes that he'll be moved tomorrow from the busy, noisy, crowded ICU to a room that will allow for visitors. I have to make a quick trip home to Port Lavaca, so I probably won't get to visit with him tomorrow. I'll be back on Sunday morning, however, ready to hear his jokes and poke fun at him a bit (since Leo is not here to do it). For those who don't know Jess, I'm sorry. I'm sorry that you don't know him, but also that you are getting an overload of news about him here. But there are some people that want to get updates and have no other way to do it. So, my apologies, but this line of comments will continue for a couple of days. Why? Because Jess is worth it.

Odds 'n' Ends

  • Dr. Rose commented that it was awfully nice of Jessie to save them the trouble and shave his head before coming in.
  • When Jess called in before heading to Houston, he found that his paperwork had not yet arrived. When he arrived on Thursday, they assured him it had finally arrived and he was set to go. When he went to the hospital this morning? He took an extra set of copies with him "just in case". He did NOT want to have to come again.
  • Although I'm generally pretty good with my internal compass, the hospital system is definitely challenging. Good thing we have Jess' brother Lester along to keep us going in the right direction.
  • Jessie's first words to us when coming out of recovery? "I feel like I've been hit in the head with a baseball bat!"
  • The prize for the most loyal sidekick goes to Jess' Uncle Walter, who was at the hospital with him from the time he walked in the door at 6am until we all left together at 5pm.
  • And the prize for the person most outside his comfort zone during all this? (No, it's not Jess.) Jessie's son Trevor, who's first words upon checking in and looking out the hotel window were "Ugh. I've gotta get back to the farm!"

Jess Update

Jess is in ICU, is clearly in some pain, but looks good. He wakes up now and then and addresses me by name so I know he'll be fine, but I wish he wasn't in so much pain. More updates to come.

At the Hospital

Sitting in the waiting room now, waiting for Jess to come out of recovery and be sent to his next destination. Jess' Uncle Walter is here (and has been all day) along with his brother Lester. Son Trevor was here much of the day but went back to the hospital after we talked to the surgeon.

Dr. Rose said the surgery went well, although it took the full 5 hours. He told us he put 2 titanium clips in place, one over 2 of the nodules and another one in another location beside the first. He ran some tests while they were in the area and confirmed that the vessels were getting the flow they needed while the clamps were allowing no leakages. He seemed to be pleased.

Jess was then moved to recovery and will be there for about an hour-and-a-half. After that, he will be moved up to the 4th floor in the post-recovery area for 24 hours or so. I'm guessing that tomorrow afternoon he'll be in a room, will be able to receive visitors, and will be providing me with some fodder for posting here and keeping you all up-to-date. My guess is that today he'll just sleep.

Can't hog the computer too long so I'm signing off now, but so far, everything looks to be progressing well. Will try to post updates later.
